This position is for our San Antonio, East Southcross Medical Center facility. Under the direction of the OR Director, the Sterile Processing Tech is re! sponsible for the mechanical operation of all sterilizers, cleaning and reprocessing of surgical instruments and equipment. Pulls the proper instruments and sterile equipment for each case scheduled in surgery. Cleans and reprocesses all instruments and equipment used in OR, ER, nursing units. Maintains accurate records of all sterilizing processes.
DUTIES
Thoroughly cleans and reprocesses surgical instruments and equipment according to policy and procedures,Maintains a clean and safe working environment.Adheres to infection control policies.Acknowledges errors promptly and notifies the appropriate person.Inspects and reports malfunctioning or broken equipment and instruments.Assists OR Director in identifying, ordering and replacing broken or work out instruments.Collects used equipment and instruments and reprocesses them in a timely manner.Follows the surgical schedule and pulls the appropriate instruments and equipment based on physician preference car! ds.Sets up sterile trays with appropriate equipment and suppli! es in an orderly fashion.Sterilizes linens, procedure trays, instrument trays and medical devices by the appropriate method and according to manufacturer's recommendations.Utilizes appropriate biological indicators to monitor sterilization process.Evaluates biological indicators for effectiveness and takes responsibility for the record keeping of all sterilizing processes.Knows parameters of sterilization requirements to be attained by each type of sterilizer to assure proper operation.Distributes or stores all items in designated area after sterilization.Checks outdated supplies and re-sterilizes as necessary.Tags all charge items accurately to ensure cost effective use of supplies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to work full time 3p-11p and must hold a certification in Sterile Processing.KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY: Knowledge of principles of asepsis and sterilization standards. The ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Abil! ity to work with other members of the healthcare team to meet patient needs. Ability to interact in a positive manner and to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, employees, supervisor and other hospital employees. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in instrument reprocessing and/or surgical scrub role. Minimum one year relevant experience. Certification in Sterile Processing required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Lifting objects in excess of fifty (50) pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds. Ability to stand on non-carpeted, composite surfaces for extended periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl, reach, use fine finger movement, speak and hear. Ability to walk long distances on a regular basis. Works with intense temperatures of steam sterilizers and ultra sonic washers. Works with chemical sterilants and cleaners. Noise level may be intense. Ability to operate! a telephone, sterile processing equipment.
