As the only freestanding heart hospital in the Texas Medical Center, the 230,000 square- foot institute features a full continuum of heart and vascular care, including noninvasive cardiology and peripheral, invasive cardiology; peripheral, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery; and cardiac rehabilitation. Our facility is one of the state?s most modern facility, housing 147 patient beds, including our new 47 beds Heart Failure Unit, a 20- bed short stay unit, cardiovascular intensive care unit, cardiology care unit and six cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs.
BASIC FUNCTION: Position develops, implements, and monitors ventricular assist device (VAD) program processes to improve patient care; responsible for performing initial assessment and evaluation of potential candidates for ventricular assist device intervention, assisting the patient for transplant and providing follow-up post transplant.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development as it relates to the different life cycles. Specific age groups that are served by this position are circled.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Registered Nurse with a current State of Texas license to practice professional nursing
2. Minimum five (5) years experience in cardiovascular nursing, cardiac surgical nursing, critical care nursing, cardiac transplantation, and/or care of patients with ventricular assist devices
3. Ability to promote teamwork, build effective relationships, and lead/facilitate work groups; ability to develop and direct VAD program processes; ability to effectively operate clinic and hospital computer systems
4. Strong customer service skills

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Performs initial assessment of patients? biophysical and psychosocial status and ensures appropriate actions are taken in relation to the nursing process (assessment, planning, education, intervention, and evaluation), noting all abnormal results and reviewing with surgeon in a timely manner; documents the nursing process, including problem list, plan of care, and patient education.
2. Provides appropriate pre-post procedure interventions within limits of licensure and or scope of practice; evaluates and collaborates with other healthcare providers to achieve outcomes; plans, coordinates, and organizes the discharge plan with inpatient nursing staff to assure continuity of care.
3. Directs and provides guidance to staff, case managers, and physicians, ensuring patient care delivery to established standards of practice.
4. Ensures safe care to patients, adhering to policies, procedures, and standards, within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and accuracy of practice.
5. Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency; supports department-based goals, which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
