This is a Supervisory, Non-Bargaining Uni! t position.
The Central Texas Veterans Health Care Sy! stem (CTVHCS)
seeks a board certified internal medicine physician to manage the hospital
medicine section. The hospital medicine section at CTVHCS has 16 physicians and
1 PA and provides coverage to approximately 60-70 acute medicine patients 24
hours a day seven days a week including weekends and federal holidays. The
hospitalist team is also responsible providing general internal medicine inpatient
consultation services. The section chief for the hospital medicine section collaborates
with the other disciplines, services, and specialties to monitor and improve
quality for care and inpatient flow and control costs. The chief is responsible
to day to day management of staff and schedules of the section including
necessary administrative tasks. For the majority of the time the chief provides
direct patient care to hospitalized patients. . Direct supervision of medical
housestaff and students and attending on the teaching servic! e is important part
of the job. The incumbent will provide quality oversight of both teaching and
non-teaching hospitalists and perform proficiency reports and professional
practice evaluations of both physician teams. He/she will coordinate hospital
wide initiatives such as patient flow, clinical pathways, high value care, and
length of stay and quality improvement initiatives and oversee implementation
across all acute medical services
In addition to board certification,
the successful candidate should have experience in the management of medical conditions
requiring hospitalization, be competent in performing routine hospital
procedures such as lumbar punctures and central line placements, and be
committed to in engaging in ongoing process improvement. Teaching medical students and residents is
core mission of the system and applicants with previous academic experience
will be given preference. The CTVHCS has stron! g quality and utilization
management programs and applicants with r! elated experience would be preferred.
The medicine service at
CTVHCS, in affiliation with the Scott and White(S&W) health systems and
Texas A&M Medical School, has a strong academic program including internal
medicine and all traditional sub-specialties. The Section Chief of the Hospital
Medicine works closely with residency program director at the S&W health
systems. The successful candidate for this position will be recommended for
academic appointment assistant professor or higher level commensurate with
previous experience and qualifications.

progress notes during the day. Daytime or night time coverage would provide
appropriate charting for any change of status of the patient including updates
for change of medication, transfers to other units and new radiographic
findings that change patient management during the "coverage" hours.
- Provide history and physicals or transfer
in-patient non-teaching service up to the capacity of the service.
- Provide inpatient medical consultation.
- Coordinate care with the nurse care
excellent quality of patient care, efficiency and good outpatient follow-up.
All patients can be followed with-in the VA primary care so this enhances good
patient care.
- Respond to all medical emergencies in the
team is on site.
- Provide accurate and helpful sign-outs
- Complete discharge summaries within 24
- Participate in any on-going hospital
clinical pathways etc.

Oversight of physician extenders will be required, though the extenders work
predominantly day shifts.
The Central ! Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) consists of two medical centers located in Temple and Waco, one stand-alone clinic in Austin, and four community based outpatient clinics in Brownwood, Cedar Park, College Station and Palestine. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Must have a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education i! n medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- Must be board certified/bo! ard eligible in Internal Medicine.
- Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C 7402(d) and 7407(d).
- Must have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or District of Columbia.
- Must have completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
