This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center, Department of Family and Community Medicine Care , Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Business Travel is not required. DUTIES:
As a nursing assistant, you will perform basic nursing care and other personal services to patients whose conditions can vary widely from those requiring screening and assistance for a wellness visit to those requiring close observation for an acute illness or following a procedure. You will screen patients by taking and recording blood pressure, pulse, temperature, etc. Serve as a chaperone for providers and give routine care to pre-and post-procedural patients. Monitor intravenous fluids, obtain routine specimens, and perform standard tests. Safely posi! tion and drape patients, set up equipment, and hand instrument! s to physician as required. Under supervision, clean simple wounds and apply bandages. Accompany patients in wheelchairs, on litters, or ambulatory within the facility as needed to complete care and treatment. Perform general maintenance duties including cleaning and arranging supply closets and reporting deficiencies in supplies. Clean exam and treatment areas as needed. Provide patient care as assigned to include documentation of nursing activities in patient records. Assist with filing laboratory, x-ray, or other documents. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Experience Requirements: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least six months to one year of general and/or specialized experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Typical examples of such work include (but are not limited to): nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or! in such work as that of a home health aide performing duties such as: providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care; support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus; caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement; and assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

These examples are typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).

Time in Grade Restrictions: Applicants may not be promoted more than 2 grades within the preceding 52 weeks.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities)in the following ! areas:

  • Ability to communicate with patients to ascert! ain need for assistance or support
  • Knowledge of Nursing Practices
  • Knowledge and skill sufficient to properly use equipment
Education Substitution: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.

Combination of Experience and Education: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education in excess of 60 hours (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total pe! rcentage must equal at least 100% to qualify. (Note: You must include a copy of your transcripts with your application.)
