Exciting
Internal Medicine Academic Hospitalist opportunity at the Michael E. DeBakey VA
Medical Center located in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center.
Members of the Hospitalist Program provide inpatient medicine care for adult Veteran
patients with a variety of acute and chronic medical problems. The MEDVAMC is an academic medical center,
and hospitalists are expected to meet ACGME standards for
key clinical faculty with our major academic affiliate, Baylor College of
Medicine. Our innovative
program combines direct clinical care, faculty development, education of
trainees, and quality improvement/patient safety initiatives. The
Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is a tertiary care state-of-the-art
facility providing health care to more than 137,000 veterans in southeast Texas
and provides specialized care for Veterans ! referred from around the
country. The facility is located on a 118 acre campus and has over
580 hospital beds, including a Spinal Cord Injury and long-term transitional
care unit. This is a unique opportunity to live
in the fourth largest city in the country possessing a diverse population,
affordable housing and no state income tax.

·
Hospitalist physicians shall be
privileged to perform all facets of Inpatient Medicine health care delivery,
including accepted emergency procedures, interpretations of
x-rays/EKG/laboratory tests, and indicated treatments (including, but not
limited to, drawing arterial blood gases, administration of vasopressors and
arterial lines, central line placement and paracentesis).

·
The physician shall provide adequate and
appropriate diagnostic evaluations on all patients presenting to the inpatient
medicine units to ensure appropriate triage decisions for level of care (observation, acute care, critical care) and placement.

· The
physician shall provide prompt diagnostic assessment and evaluation,
including full history and physical exam, appropriate labs, radiological
imaging, appropriate consultations,
documentation of the evaluation and appropriate coding for billing in
progress notes, appropriate triage, communication with admitting teams, and
discharge planning on all patients.

·
The physician shall communicate and
interact with the admitting team and provide a provisional diagnosis, the
results of the initial evaluation, any treatment initiated and current
stability of the patient.

·
To maintain continuity of care all
patients who require continued acute care/assessment because of pending results
from laboratory, radiology, or other diagnostic evaluations, or
medical/surgical consults will be checked out to the contractorÂ's hospitalist
physician on duty who will complete the work-up and make appropriate tri! age
decisions.

·
Physician shall review all Outlook and
VISTA e-mail communications and all individual communications placed in his/her
mail box prior to completing his/her duty shift.

·
The physician will complete and sign all
electronic medical records and all orders prior to the completion of each duty
shift. Consistent with current medical
staff by-laws, all transcribed electronic medical record documents must be
signed within twenty-four (24) hours of the encounter regardless of the
contract physician's duty schedule.

·
The physician will complete all patient
encounters (note) within twenty-four (24) hours of patient visit.

·
The physician will meet all performance
measure goals.

·
All physicians must complete VAMC
mandatory initial training (estimated time requirement is approximately 25
hours per year) and annual training requirements (estimated time ! requirement is
approximately 10 hours per year). It is anticipated ! that most physicians will
be able to complete mandatory annual training requirements during regularly
scheduled work shifts.

·
Professional services shall be performed
in accordance with established principles and ethics of the medical
profession. The quality of healthcare
provided shall meet or exceed the currently recognized standards established by
the American Medical Association (AMA), Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM),
American College of Physicians (ACP), Joint Commission (JC), Veterans Health
Administration regulations and medical staff by-laws and those of other
professional associations which specify standards of performance for the
medical profession.

·
The MEDVAMC is an academic medical center and
hospitalists are expected to meet ACGME standards for key clinical faculty.

  • The services to be performed gby the physician will be monitored by the Chief of Hospital Medicine, As! sociate Chief of Medicine, Chief of Medicine, Chief of Staff and appropriate staff of the MEDVAMC.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy Carrying (45 lbs and over); Pulling hand over hand (2 hours); Pushing (1 hours); Both hands required; Walking (up to 4 hours); Standing (up to 4 hours); Kneeling (1 hour); Repeated bending (up to 2 hour); Both legs required; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Hearing aid permitted.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

In
order to q! ualify for this position you must meet the following:

Basic! Requirements :

Must be proficient in written and spoken
English.

·
Current, full and unrestricted license
to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the
United States, or in the District of Columbia.

·
Degree of doctor of medicine or an
equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or
osteopathic medicine.

Preferred

Experience: :
Physicians who are either certified by the American Board of Medical
Specialists or who have successfully completed a three (3) year residency
program in Internal Medicine and are currently eligible to sit for the American
Board of Internal Medicine. Prior
hospitalist experience and/or teaching experience both a plus.
