The Pre-Op Nurse assesses and prepares patients for surgery safely and in a timely manner, communicating findings with appropriate medical staff! , and assuring continuity of care and patient confidentiality.

SECTION 2: PATIENT AGE GROUP SERVED

Infant, Pediatric, Adolescence, Adult & Geriatrics

SECTION 3: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
PRE-OP NURSE DUTIES:
1. Admit patient to pre-op in a timely manner.

A. Identify patient by name and check accuracy of ID band.

B. Determine NPO status.

C. Determine surgeon and type of procedure being performed,

Double check operative and informed consents sent from floor or PAT.

D. Assess patient health status and obtain health and social history.

E. Review and obtain applicable consents.

F. Check chart for completeness:
1. Anesthesia consent

2. Informed consent

3. Operative consent

4. Advanced directives

5. History & Physical

6. Labs if applicable

7. EKG if applicable

8. CXR if applicable
9. Preanesthesia evaluation

10. Face sheet

! 11. Labels

12. Orders if applicable

G. Obtain vital signs

1. BP

2. Pulse

3. Respirations

4. Temp

5. SaO2

H. Have patient remove all jewelry, dental appliances, glasses or contact lenses, and hairpins.

L. Instruct patient to change into gown and socks. Patient must

remove underwear.

M. Review and execute any applicable orders from attending physician

and anesthesia.

N. Instruct family where to wait and proper use of in house beeper

system.

O. Perform blood sugars on Insulin Dependent Diabetics and record

results. Follow up if necessary.

P. Start IV’s

Q. Review and communicate abnormal clinical results with anesthesia

and attending physician when applicable.

2. Maintain cleanliness of area and operational efficiency of equipment.

Organize and prepare department for next day’s schedule.!

A. Assist in cleaning and restocking panels as necessary.

B. Prepare charts for next day surgery patients.

C. Make and distribute missing H&P list for next day surgery.

E. Stock drawers and cabinets.

F. Plug in computers for recharging.

G. Replace red Sharps box when ¾ full.

H. Lock cabinets.

3. Assist PAT department as needed. Pre-assessment of patients coming in for surgery at a future

date â€" either via telephone or in person.

A. Assess patient health status and review pre-anesthetic evaluation with

patient.

B. Review orders and complete/order necessary lab or x-rays.

C. Determine need to see and/or consult with anesthesia in advance of

surgery. Follow up as applicable.

D. Provide and review preop instructions with patient and family.

E. Perform EKG’s as necessary. Follow up as necessary.

4. Assist with Post â€"Op p! atients follow up phone calls.

A. Participate in call rotation! .

B. Assist with post-surgical telephone calls.

CERTIFICATES & LICENSES REQUIRED: RN , BLS, ACLS, PALS

SECTION 7: WORKING ENVIRONMENT PRE-OP

Routine hazards and risks involved in performing nursing activities and other clinical activities, including potential exposure to infectious processes, potential exposure to hazardous substances, potential musculoskeletal injuries. Handles emergency crisis situations. Requires judgment/action, which could result in death of patient .

EXPERIENCE:
1-2 years experience in Pre-OP area taking care of adults and children
