This position is located in the Department of Surgery, Anesthesiology and Anesthesia Nursing Operative Service, an organization that provides anesthetic service in the form of both general and conduction anesthesia for surgical operations and medical procedures, and which instructs nurse anesthetists in limited uses of anesthetics in the operating room. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

DUTIES:
The incumbent serves as a Nurse Anesthetist, with responsibility for applying a substantial depth of analysis in determining the best type and method of nursing care to administer for a broad range of types of surgery including the most complex performed at the center.

Interviews patients the day prior to their scheduled surgery in order to evaluate their physical and mental conditions with respect to anesthesia, to determine and discuss type of anesthesia to be used, and to explain expected outcomes and possible anesthetic complications. Reviews patient's chart and recommends type of anesthesia. Consult with anesthesiologist when necessary on desired course of action when patient's physical or mental condition, history, and/or extenuating circumstances seem to be an extreme complicating factor.

Assume responsibility for all techniques, drugs, and equipment used in the administration of anesthesia to all patients undergoing any and all forms of surgical and/or diagnostic procedures. Sets up equipment used in performance of work and assumes the responsibility for the care, sanitation, and inspection for proper functioning of that equipment. Enforces rules of safety with respect to highly explosive anesthetics or gases; assures that patients, personnel, and equipment are properly grounded and that area is scavenged of gases.

Anesthetizes patients for a broad range of surgery including the most complex of surgical procedures performed at WBAMC. Administer anesthetic by inhalation endotracheal intubation, regional, intravenous, or topical. Induces anesthesia to proper levels and manages patient care throughout prolonged surgery. Monitors patient's loss of fluids; determines need for and administers parenteral fluids, including plasma and blood, sets up solutions and maintains proper flow. Administer stimulants as required. Observes the patient during the operation for signs to accomplish and maintain the proper stage of narcosis and to prevent overdosage. Adjusts the administration of anesthetic agents as well as other drugs and utilizes proper methods to support respiratory and circulatory functions of patients.

Give immediate post-operative care to patients during their return to ward or recovery room to insure clear airway and freedom from possibility of shock or other adverse reactions from anesthesia. .

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Minimum Qualifications:
Degree: Applicants MUST be a Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant; and Masters degree from an academic program, within the nursing specialty field of study, that is accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education. Licensure: Applicants MUST possess and maintain a current, valid, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license from a US jurisdiction, and must be licensed to the advanced practice level in accordance with the US jurisdiction requirements of their currently held RN license. Certification: Certification as a Nurse Anesthetist by a nationally recognized nures credentialing organization is a requirement for employment. Specialized Experience: Applicants MUST clearly demonstrate in their resume that they possess one (1) year of specialized experience to the next lower level (GS-11), as a APRN, requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. Candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate in their resume that they possess specialized experience which involves a specialized area of anesthesia nursing practices and procedures including techniques of physical and emotional assessment, implementation of care, and evaluation of results.

Personnel security investigation required. Childcare Background Investigation (CNACI) is required. A medical examination is required prior to employment. Hepatitis B immunization is required (direct patient contact). This position is covered by the Drug Abuse Testing Program. Applicant drug testing and random drug testing will be required.
