Overall Job Summary: The scope of the position is to manage and direct all activities of the special techniques group in support of the conduct of global preclinical safety studies for pharmaceutical, OTC and medical device candidates.

The incumbent will direct a centralized function to perform highly specialized and technical in vivo examinations (invasive & non-invasive) to support the conduct of preclinical safety studies. The incumbent will conduct ocular surgeries, ocular injections and ophthalmic examinations in various species and oversee data collection. Specialized services include overseeing and /or conducting ERG, ABR, OCT, specular microscopy, & specialized tissue collection, as well as development of novel animal models to support preclinical efforts. Other responsibilities include assisting in Interpretation of ocular findings and data collected from specialized in vivo examinations and for collaborations with external medical professionals to support specialized procedures that require veterinarian or medical expertise and oversight. The incumbent will have a key role in ensuring timely completion of all objectives, ensuring preclinical safety studies are appropriately implemented by providing supportive services. The incumbent will ensure timely planning and completion of study support activities, compliance to regulations, timely identification and resolution of issues, lead problem-solving collaborations with multi-functional teams, ensure utilization of currently approved methods and implementation of new technologies to address non-clinical requirements.

Management responsibilities will include communicating project status in management or staff meetings and/or via monthly reports, and support allocation of resources in consideration of department need and R&D plans. Additional management responsibilities include the management and development of staff, including hiring decisions and supervising training of personnel.

Knowledge of preclinical safety study activities and processes, working knowledge of good laboratory practices, animal welfare and surgical aptitude is preferred, as well as a demonstrated record in leadership in supporting a dynamic scientific organization.

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Veterinarian (DVM) with laboratory animal medicine, veterinary surgery or ophthalmology experience or- MD in Ophthalmology with laboratory animal and model experience
  • Board certification by ACLAM, ACVS, or ACVO preferred
Minimum Experience Requirements:
At least 8 + years with supervisory and preclinical study implementation or conduct of ophthalmic procedures.
  • Demonstrated clinical aptitude in surgical procedures required. Training opportunities available.
