Job Purpose: Understand the procedure being performed and assures all equipment, instrumentation and supplies are available for the case. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon. Handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Participates in setting up and turning over the operating room for the cases. Can scrub any surgical specialty. Scrubs neuro and/or cardio- thoracic open heart, and takes heart calls. Is a mentor and trainer for Scrub Techs.

Education

Graduate of Surgical Technologist program, military trained, or AD in Surgical Technology preferred.

High School Diploma and/or GED equivalent

Licenses and/or Certifications

Certified Surgical Technologist

Related Work Experience and Other Skills

  • Ability to be trained to perform computer fu! nctions.
  • Ability to make fast and accurate judgments ! when necessary
  • Able to develop and maintain good working relationships with all levels of staff, patients and family members
  • Able to professionally and effectively communicate (orally and in writing).
  • Able to read, write and speak English
  • Able to work in a fast paced, hectic environment handling stress inorder to meet deadlines.
  • Exposure to hazards from blood born pathogens, needles, blades, and instruments, but little chance of injury when safety precautions are followed.
Work Experience: 5 years or more prior experience in all specialties with emphasis in advanced neuro procedures and /or cardio-thoracic/open heart surgeries.

Job Roles

  • Anticipates needs of the surgical team and has instrumentation and supplies available when needed.
  • Assists with terminal cleaning of room and preparation for the following case.
  • Begins cleaning up back table and preparing instruments ! for terminal cleaning and sterilization as circulator prepares patient to leave the room. Places instruments back in trays for transport to SPD. Sprays instruments wit enzymatic cleaner prior to sending down to SPD.
  • Dons PPE, scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to aseptic standards, using open and closed gloving technique. Gowns and gloves team members.
  • Drapes or assists in draping sterile field. Works with students, residents, and interns on draping techniques.
  • Follows count policy and time-out procedure with circulating nurse. Verifies correct counting practice and time-out procedure with students and inexperienced staff.
  • Hooks up chest bottles and other drains as directed. Prepares sterile dressing and applies to incision using aseptic technique.
  • Maintains sterile field and observes for breaks in sterile technique during procedure. Observes and coaches students and inexperienced staff on proper aseptic technique.
  • Obta! ins 15 CEU’s per year.
  • Obtains and checks supplies and equip! ment needed for surgical procedure.
  • Passes instruments to surgeon and assistant during procedure. Works with students and inexperienced staff on correct method for passing and retrieving instruments during surgical procedures.
  • Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, medications, and solutions needed for procedure. Labels all medications and solutions. Works with students/inexperienced staff in correct set-ups for procedure.
  • Works with RNs on special projects related to assigned service.
