Job Summary:!
Provide quality care to patients in the pre and postoperative phases of the ambulatory surgery experience.

Supervisor:
Director of Ambulatory Services

Duties Include but are not limited to:
o Introduce yourself and interview the patient/family for pertinent information.
o Apply ID bracelet and applicable allergy bands.
o Review preoperative chart to ensure all lab studies and necessary paperwork are present.
o Have the patient or guardian sign the operative consent and have physician perform preoperative assessment prior to going to OR.
o Verify patient name, date of birth and planned procedure and site.
o Monitor vital signs and assess cardiac and fluid volume, airway potency and wounds/drains.
o Implement and sign off on physician pre and post op orders
o Demonstrate awareness of patientsÂ' concerns and a willingness to address them
o Avoid and prevent casual discussion of patientÂ's surgery ! among employees.
o Ensure patients safety and comfort. o Observe pertinent changes in symptoms of patientsÂ' condition and take appropriate action; report to physician
o Document all nursing interventions in the patientÂ's chart
o Perform narcotic count at the beginning and end of each working day.
o Maintain accurate records of narcotics dispensed in the narcotic log book.
o Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
o Complete necessary pre-and post-operative teaching of patient and family
o Maintain open lines of communication on the patientÂ's status with OR and anesthesia staff throughout the Perioperative period.
o Clean an restock all areas at the end of the day
o Participate in inventory control by reporting on low stock levels etc.
o Implement cost containment measures
o Participate in quality assurance initiatives
o Assist with updating of printed material: e.g. surgeonÂ's post-op orders, discharge instructions, etc.
o Make preoperative assessment and post-op! erative follow-up calls as required.

Position Requirements:
EDUCATION:
Must be currently licensed as a nurse in the State of Texas or eligible for endorsement. Minimum of one year experience as a nurse. Must possess BLS certification (ACLS/PALS preferred).

EXPERIENCE:
Demonstrates proficiency and independence in the care of patients with complex diagnoses and nursing problems. Takes charge effectively in emergency situations.

SKILLS:
Excellent communication skills and knowledge of surgical procedures, specifically Orthopaedics and Pain Management.

ABILITIES:
Basic computer knowledge; read/write English; Spanish a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires extensive mobility (walking and standing) while performing duties. Periodic pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients and /or equipment. Many have exposure to patients with communicable diseases. May have exp! osure to hazardous equipment or agents
