POSITION SUMMARY: The Resource Nurse for Labor and Delivery is responsible for planning and providing individual goal directed nursing care that promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety and rights of the individual, family and community. The nurse possesses knowledge of the principles of growth and development and the particular skills necessary to provide optimum patient care to the population for which he or she is employed. The Resource Nurse for Labor and Delivery is accountable for their practice and care coordination. The Resource Nurse for Labor and Delivery is expected to practice in conjunction with the bedside Labor and Delivery RN utilizing evidence based practices. The practice of the Resource Nurse for Labor and Delivery will support the mission, vision and values of the Medical Center of Plano and the philosophy of the Department of Nursing. The Resource Nurse for Labor and Delivery will coordinate with bedside Labor and Delivery nurse in preparing patient for surgery and will act as a circulating RN in the OR after fetal heart tones have been assessed by a Labor and Delivery bedside RN prior to incision. The Resource nurse will be under the supervision of and maintain effective communication with the Labor and Delivery charge RN. The Resource Nurse for Labor and Delivery is responsible for having a basic understanding of the labor process and physiological changes of pregnancy. Obstetrical and fetal assessments will remain the responsibility of the bedside Labor and Delivery RN. While the Resource nurse may assist the bedside RN, she may not perform these duties independently. Obstetrical and fetal assessments include, but are not limited to, fetal heart tones, vaginal exams, and administration of induction/augmentation medications. Ongoing competencies of responsibilities will be maintained.
Required Job Qualifications include:
Current licensure as an RN. Current certification as a BLS Healthcare Provider, ACLS and NRP. Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. Minimum one year nursing experience required. Customer service abilities including effective listening skills. Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment. Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.
